About Outdoor Dog Safety

The story behind this site — and the dog who started it all.

ROADSIDE

How We Met

I met my dog on the side of a road.

I don’t know where she came from. I don’t know how long she had been there.

But the moment she saw me, she ran toward me. No hesitation. No fear. Just this absolute, unwavering certainty that I was her person.

I didn’t adopt her. She adopted me.

LOSS

What I Lost

From that day on, she never left my side.

When I ate, she was there. When I showered, she waited outside the door. When I worked, she rested her head on my knee.

She followed me everywhere — not because she had to, but because she wanted to.

And then, one day, I looked away.

I didn’t see the danger. She didn’t know it was there.

By the time I understood, it was too late.

I lost her — not because I didn’t love her, but because I didn’t know what I didn’t know.

MEMORY

She's Still Everywhere

It’s been 2 months since she left. But I still think about her every single day.

Every time I eat, I expect to hear her paws on the floor.

Every time I shower, I look at the door, remembering she used to sit right there, waiting.

Every time I sit down to work, my leg still expects the weight of her head.

The house is full of her. Her fur still finds its way into corners I’ve cleaned a hundred times. Her leash hangs by the door — I can’t bring myself to move it. Her favorite spot on the couch is still empty.

There are days I catch myself thinking:

Right now, she’d be lying in the sun.

Right now, she’d be following me to the kitchen.

Right now, she’d be dreaming with her paws twitching.

I know those moments aren’t real anymore. But I can’t stop them from coming.

And the truth is — I don’t want to.

MISSION

Why I Started This

OutdoorDogSafety.com wasn’t built from research. It was built from grief.

After I lost my dog, I spent a long time replaying that day in my head.

What did I miss? Why didn’t I see it? How could I have let this happen to the one creature who trusted me more than anyone in the world?

I still don’t have all the answers. But I do know this:

My dog trusted me to see the danger. And I missed it.

Dogs don’t understand cliffs, traffic, toxic plants, contaminated water, or overheating. They don’t know that the sunny pavement can burn their paws or that the snake in the grass could be deadly. They just see adventure. They just trust us to keep them safe.

And the truth is, I didn’t know enough to do that. Not really. Not the way I should have.

That’s a hard thing to admit. But if admitting it helps even one other dog come home safe, then it’s worth it.

Introduce

What I Believe

Dogs deserve to be outdoors.
They were born to run, explore, sniff, and chase. Keeping them inside forever isn’t the answer. The answer is learning how to let them be dogs—safely.

Dogs can’t see danger.
That’s not a flaw—it’s part of what makes them wonderful. But it’s also why we have a responsibility to look for them.

Prevention is better than regret.
I know this better than most. A few seconds of awareness can make all the difference. Most accidents are preventable—if we know what to look for.

We learn best from each other.
I don’t have all the answers. Nobody does. But together, we know a lot. This site is a place where we share what we’ve learned—so nobody has to learn it the hard way.

WELCOME

Let's Keep More Dogs Safe

I started this site because I wish I had known more. I wish I had paid closer attention. I wish I had seen the danger before it was too late.

But I can’t change what happened to my dog.

What I can do is make sure other dogs don’t share her fate.

Every article, every checklist, every tip on this site is my way of saying:

She was here.
She was loved.
And she mattered.

So if you’ve got a tip, a question, a close call, or just a story about your dog — please share it.

Outdoor dog safety isn’t about being perfect. It’s about paying attention, learning from each other, and never forgetting that our dogs trust us to see what they can’t.

That’s what this site is for.

That’s what my dog’s memory deserves.

And that’s why you’re here.

Welcome. I’m glad you found us.
